One thing that is important when putting together a show besides having music, a uniform, a routine, is make-up.
I come from a home where using some simple make-up to make you look professional, is okay. In color guard, if your make-up can’t be seen from the top of the Dayton Arena, then it needs to be bigger.
Throughout my five years spinning with Blessed Sacrament Color Guard, I have tried a variety of different make-up looks that went with each of our performances. Each member has to do their own make-up, which makes each person their own canvas.

During 2015, Highland Avenue, we tried a lot of various looks. We had a basic look, contoured face, natural eye shadow, false eyelashes, and bright red lipstick. After each performance, there would always be a slight change to our look. The changes that we tried was; changing our eye shadow color, and trying out some “tribal marks” drawn onto our foreheads and cheeks.

During 2016, Love Trust and Commitment, the make-up was very simple. All we had to do was natural make-up, false eyelashes, and we had a choice in the color of our purple lipstick. Nothing about this make-up look was big and dramatic. It was subtle, and matched the look which we were trying to achieve.

During 2017, Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, we had two different make-up looks. It began with everyone being given a single color. I was given the color blue, and my sister was given the color orange. Our goal for our first look was to have the color blocked on our eyes to make it look like a mask wrapping around our head, and have the bright purple lipstick to accompany the eye shadow. This look eventually turned into a nice smokey eye with a silver lid, and pink and blue on the outside.

During 2018, Hello, we once again had a simple makeup look. We had to so a simple contour, false eyelashes, natural smokey eye, and bright red lipstick. This was the look that we had all season. This was the first season where our instructor brought in a makeup artist to show us how to accomplish the look that we were going for.

Now in our 2019 season, Parell on the Sea show, for me this is the most challenging make-up look that I have ever done. One half of our face is alive, while the other half is dead. We have accomplished this look through the use of different colors, and different techniques, which we had to figure out on our own. This is one of my favorite looks that I have had the opportunity to try.
To accomplish all of these looks, I had to do a lot of research to figure out how to do make-up. All that I was familiar with was how to put on some mascara and a roll on eye shadow. Each look that we had to do for each show, took a lot of time and practice on our own to accomplish.
With all the practice, we were able to have an incredible make-up look that accompanied our show and outfits. I was also able to gain knowledge as to how to do regular everyday make-up as well.
